The SET Alliance webinar series ‘servitisation for the energy transition’ brings stakeholders together to discuss the key topics surrounding as-a-service solutions.

On the 21st of February 2023, the SET Alliance hosted a webinar focusing on digitalisation as part of its ongoing series: ‘understanding servitisation for the energy transition’. The event was designed to delve into the hot topic of ‘digitalisation’ to understand its value for customers, businesses, and financial institutions in the space of energy efficiency and decarbonisation efforts. The session was moderated by Steering Committee member of the SET Alliance and expert on servitisation and business transformation Dr. Parikshit Naik of Advanced Services Group,  and featured presentations from a selection of the most promising players leveraging digital tools for energy efficiency: Brainbox AI, Daikin, and HCL Tech. The presentations were followed by a Q&A session with commentary from LCP-Delta.

The Panel

The panel represented a range of organisations operating in the space of energy efficiency, digital tools, and as-a-service solutions:

Chief Product Officer of BrainBox AI Omar Tabba, discussed how artificial intelligence can be leveraged for the smart management of building HVAC systems by using data like weather and use patterns to create a ‘self-driving building’.

Business Development Senior Manager at Daikin Ricardo Rodriguez spoke about ‘Comfort Loop’, their Cooling-as-a-Service solution in latin America and the annual innovative DISRUPTAIR Challenge with the Instuto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey.

Sales Manager at HCL Tech Kristian Copeland, presented HCL’s wide range of solutions which could be of use to as-a-Service providers to optimise processes such as maintenance and repair, such as Internet of Things (IoT) enabled solutions allowing for the assessment of performances and state of smart devices facilitating interactions between the customer and provider.

New energy Business Model analyst from LCP-Delta Arthur Pereira provided key insights on research and energy market developments and the role and value of digitalisation.

Highlights

Digital solutions for as-a-service offerings can create value in multiple ways, not just in value delivery as is commonly identified. The figure below illustrates the different areas where implementing digital tools can add value.

Dr. Parikshit Naik of Advanced Services Group on the four elements of business models and how to include digitalisation.

Omar Tabba of BrainBox AI, on how artificial intelligence can be leveraged to take care of a building’s HVAC operations considering internal and external factors.

Ricardo Rodriguez of Daikin, on innovation, integrating technologies into conventional business models and the Disruptair challenge.

Kristian Copeland of HCL Tech, on digitalising appliances to optimise maintenance and the overall performances of technologies.

The role of digital technology in enabling ‘Value Delivery’ of as-a-service models has always been under the spotlight – Digital technology can help a service provider deliver the service efficiently and at scale. But through this discussion with Daikin, BrainBox AI, HCLTech, and LCPDelta, we can see how digital technology plays a crucial role in enabling the three other mechanisms of an as-a-Service business model – Value Creation, Value Capture, and the resulting Competitive Advantage. Together, such solutions can be fundamental to a true digitally enabled servitisation journey.
